Chemical Dependency

drug addiction

Chemical Dependency is the physical or psychological dependence on alcohol or drugs., better known as drug addiction. The National Institutes on Drug Abuse and Alcohol Abuse & Addiction define addiction as a chronic, often relapsing brain disease that causes compulsive alcohol and drug use despite the often harmful consequences to the individual who is addicted and to those around them. Both alcohol and drug addiction lead to changes in the structure and function of the user’s brain. Although the initial decision to take drugs or alcohol is usually voluntary, over time the changes in the brain caused by repeated alcohol and drug abuse can affect a person’s self control, and reduce their ability to make sound decisions.

Alcohol and drug addiction can be successfully treated through a drug detox program and rehabilitative drug treatment programs. Throughout treatment, clients are provided with the necessary tools to develop a new self-image, and to initiate positive life changes. Clients learn to understand and accept their drug addictions. After detox, clients are placed into an appropriate drug treatment program that suits their individual needs.
